Dear Constituents,
On Monday, March 4, the House paid tribute to Carl Beverly “Bev” Bledsoe who served in the House from 1972-1991. He passed away in 2012.
The moods under the Golden Dome have been at opposite ends of the spectrum. One side of the aisle was happy to see gun control bills advancing, civil unions being recognized and in-state tuition granted for children of undocumented immigrants. The other side lamented the attacks on the 2nd Amendment, the ignoring of religious liberty and the rewarding of children of non-US citizens over the children of US citizens.
Both houses continue to deal with social issues and “do something” bills instead of jobs, the economy and education. All 3 of these substantive issues are near to my heart and of concern to us here in House District 60. Believe it or not, I was even approached to co-sponsor a “State Pet” bill - Really?
I have been asked to help co-sponsor the 2013 School Finance Bill in the House. This 2013 School Finance Bill is not to be confused with the new “School Finance Act” that is being proposed by Senator Johnston (SB13-213). He plans a $1 Billion state-wide tax levy to fund it (now amended to $1.2 Billion).
I have to say, someone must have gotten the message - now everything is being presented as a “jobs bill”! The only problem is the approach to job creation. The Dems want to create government jobs through more rules and regulations while the Republicans want less government and more opportunities for small businesses. The battle continues...
